Kolinsky starter-selection & care guide
New to miniature painting? Start with a size 1 for general work, or size 2 if you mainly paint broader areas and blend colors. Add a size 0 when you need a dedicated brush for tiny details. You do not need every size to get started; these are suggested uses, not strict limits.
- Size 0: Tiny accents, fine detail work and facial details such as eyes.
- Size 1: An all-round starting point for controlled base coats on small areas, detail work and faces.
- Size 2: Base coats and blending across clothing, armor and other medium-sized areas.
- Size 3: Broader base coats, blending over larger surfaces and larger projects; use a larger dedicated brush when coverage matters more than precision.
Plus or Lux?
Plus is the lower-priced starting option at each listed size; Lux is the higher-priced option. The information provided here does not establish differences in hair grade, construction, paint capacity or durability, so a higher price alone is not a reason to expect better results. For a first purchase, choose Plus in the size that fits your work. Consider paying more for Lux when you can identify a specific feature or handling preference that matters to you, rather than assuming it is necessary for beginners.
Clean, reshape and store
For water-based acrylics, rinse frequently during painting and keep paint out of the metal ferrule. After each session, gently clean with brush soap suitable for natural hair and lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly and reshape the damp tip. Do not scrub, use hot water or leave the brush standing on its bristles in a water pot. Let it dry flat with the tip clear of the surface, then store dry with the bristles protected, flat or upright with the tip up. For other paints, follow the paint and cleaner manufacturers' guidance on natural-hair compatibility. Use a separate brush for drybrushing or other rough work.
